James Kielkopf

James Kielkopf has established a common ground of curvilinear geometric shapes and forms in both his paintings and recent paper collages. His earlier and recent paintings are constructed layers of masonite shapes hand-cut, assembled and brush painted. Even though from a distance they appear mechanically produced, upon closer inspection they reveal the raw beauty of the artist’s hand. His latest direction again incorporates the complex nature of the circle and numerous applications of various radii. These works, which are smaller in scale, feature select pieces of color paper ranging from shopping bags to exotic artist papers that are adhered to cut door panels. These pieces, like the paintings, reflect a handmade quality with an emphasis on color and composition.

James Kielkopf has exhibited his work extensively throughout the region. His work is in many private, corporate and museum collections including The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and General Mills, Minneapolis. He also has been the recipient of several grants and fellowships, among them the McKnight foundation Fellowship and the prestigious Vanderlip Award form the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
